English is a Western Germanic language that was first spoken in early medieval England and is now a lingua franca worldwide.
The de facto official language of the United Kingdom, Ireland and other islands of the British archipelago (Isle of Man, Channel Islands), English is the mother tongue of all or part of the population, and depending on the case, the language or one of the official languages of several countries, wholly or partly derived from the former British colonies, including the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, which are brought together under the name Anglo-Saxon world, although there is no universal definition of this expression.
