About

French is a Romance language of the Indo-European family. He descended from the vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, like all Romance languages. French has evolved from Gallo-Romanesque, Latin spoken in Gaul and more precisely in northern Gaul.

French was formed in France (variety of “langue d’oïl”, which is the language of the northern part of the country) and is today spoken on all continents by about 274 million people including 212 million people. ‘use 76 million daily, being native speakers. In 2014, 77 million students and students learn French in the world. It is one of the six official languages and one of the two working languages (with English) of the United Nations, and the official or working language of several international or regional organizations, including the European Union. After having been in the time of the Ancien Régime the language of the royal and princely courts, from Russian tsars to the kings of Spain and England to the princes of Germany, it remains an important language of the international diplomacy alongside English.

Particularity of the French language, its development and its codification were partly the work of intellectual groups, like the Pleiades, or institutions, like the French Academy. It is a so-called “academic” language. However, the use retains its rights and many people who popularized this living language, in the forefront of which Rabelais and Molière: it is also question of the “language of Molière”.
